West Wimmera Shire Council is urging dog owners to pick up after their pets when using Council-owned ovals, following growing concerns about public health and safety.

Over the next month, Council will be monitoring dog waste issues at local ovals following repeated reports of droppings being left behind.

If there is no noticeable improvement during this period, dogs could be prohibited from all Council-managed ovals.

Council Chief Executive Officer David Bezuidenhout said it’s important that we keep our public spaces safe and clean for everyone who uses them, especially children and sports clubs.

“Dog waste left on ovals poses a health risk and undermines the efforts of those who do the right thing,” he said.

Dog faeces can carry bacteria and parasites that remain in the soil, presenting a particular risk to people involved in sport and physical activity.

Council will be monitoring the situation during the trial period and asks all dog owners to take responsibility for cleaning up after their pets.

Waste bags and bins are available at many locations.

“We’re asking for community cooperation to ensure that everyone can continue to enjoy our ovals,” Mr Bezuidenhout said.

“This is about public health, safety, and respect for shared spaces.”
