Bird flu detected in Victoria – what to do if you find a sick or dead
Published on 04 August 2026
H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) has been detected in wild birds in Victoria, following earlier detections in other states. The current risk to people is low, and there's no food safety risk from properly cooked poultry or eggs.
If you find a sick or dead bird, avoid contact – don't touch it, and keep pets away from the area. Record what you see, including the exact location. Then report it.
