HARROW - Takes a village to raise a child, takes a town to sell a garage
!!
23rd June 2011
Last Wednesday night the community of Harrow met to discuss the future of the town’s only garage, after 36 years the current owner of the business, Bernie Kelly due to ill health and a long tooth has finally had to concede that the time had come. Addressing the meeting Mrs. Kelly said her husband Bernie was suffering the burden of guilt and worry at the thought of closing the doors and the major effect that would cause for the community and large outlying district of Harrow. Mrs. Kelly told how she and Bernie had arrived in Harrow in 1975 raised seven children and had loved every moment of been part of such a terrific township and were still committed to the town having purchased another home for their retirement in Harrow.
With the representation of over seventy families and a further twenty apologies it’s clear that the community of Harrow intends to take whatever action necessary to facilitate a successful outcome for all.
The meeting chaired by John Shrive and assisted by Murray McGinnis and Jane Craig saw the first half of the evening produce a very productive brainstorming session with the community providing a number of very handy ideas, from there it was voted to elect a working committee to investigate the many avenues presented on the night and work with the Kelly’s in attracting a buyer.
Ange Newton from the Harrow Discovery/ Johnny Mullagh centre said the community was optimistic about the garages future believing a solution would not be to far away. She said the committee was really keen to look beyond the norm and explore as many avenues as possible.
West Wimmera Shire CEO Mr. Mark Crouch assured the meeting that the Shire would offer whatever assistance it could and would work with the newly formed committee in achieving a successful outcome.
Mr. Kelly said he and his wife were open to a number of various options and were more than happy to talk to anybody generally interested in the business opportunity.
Bernie Kelly can be contacted on 0355881242 or the newly form committee members are
Wayne McClure, Tim Leeming, Jane Craig, Ange Newton, Heath McClure and Graham Holmes can be reached via Ange Newton at the Harrow Discovery Centre on 0355881387 or email discover.harrow@gmail.com
Various options the committee would investigate included:
* Seeking young mechanic looking for his own business with a mentoring opportunity available.
* Seeking a mechanic with young family looking for a fantastic safe environment to bring up there family.
* Perhaps a middle aged mechanic who wanted his own business away from the rat race.
* Looking for mechanics working in the mining industry that might be ready to buy their own business.
* Advertising in New Zealand or possibly Japan for someone looking for a ready made business home and lifestyle.
